I've been coming here for more than five years now and the food always tastes amazing! Although it's not the cleanest restaurant (I try and avoid using the restroom), I love the food that they serve! I can't stop eating it. My family and I usually order the three dish set for lunch, which also comes with soup. As for the rice, they will bring out a whole container full but they will charge each person for the rice, meaning rice is not included in the lunch set. We love to order their steamed catfish, honey pork ribs, steamed pork and salted fish meat cake, mixed chicken and seafood vegetable with soft tofu (served in one of those xiao long bao straw containers), and many other delicious entrees. Before leaving, I also love to order their desserts up at the front counter. I get the mini rice cake bowls with red beans and their egg custard filled pastries. I'm always excited to come eat here because I'm never disappointed. The last time we went, they even had a lobster special for $9.95. We didn't see it until after we ordered all our food but we will definitely try that out next time. It looks like a really good deal.

We ate here for breakfast after we landed from SFO Airport. Food was okay and nothing too special. We ordered the following: - Fish porridge: Porridge didn't have much flavor. - Chow mein: Noodles were soggy, so that was a disappointing. - Rice noodle wrapped in Chinese donut: The chinese donut was good since it was crispy and made fresh. Most people tended to order items to-go.

This is my go to Chinese take out place when everyone in my house is too lazy to cook or if we haven't gone grocery shopping. My mom has been getting us for from this place for a few years now. I have never actually been inside until today. The place looks like it can use some upgrades overall and looked old but it did look clean enough to eat at. My mom always orders us the spare ribs, beef with mixed mushrooms, and salt and pepper fish fillets. The spare ribs is good but its really sticky and sweet and sometimes there wouldn't be enough meat on the bones. The beef and mixed mushrooms is pretty good. I just eat it to get my daily serving of vegetables. My favorite dish is the salt and pepper fillets. Its perfectly cooked on the inside with a nice breaded crisp on the outside. It's also garnished with green onions n peppers which I like to mix into my white rice. Over all this is a great place for pick up and you get your money's worth! Parking is difficult, plan accordingly.

Decent to-go dim-sum place The inside is small, and some of the walls seemed old--the store looks like it's been around for a while. The menu is prominently displayed high up on the wall. You can also see a large selection of cakes and to-go chinese food in the heated counter next to the entrance, along with a large bamboo steamer that holds the dim sum. The place is primarily a congee and dim sum place, with also authentic chinese dishes offered at a low price. Think of this as a place for good to-go food. You can find authentic and american chinese food here, for cheap, and for very little wait time since most of everything is ready. The food quality is pretty good as well--not insanely good, but not bad for the price. Stop by if you are looking for some quick to-go food once in a while.

I was reading some of the reviews and a lot of people seem to like the dim sum here. Their dim sum may be good, so I don't want to dissuade you from that, BUT don't come here for dinner. We ordered three items for take out and had to wait over 30 minutes. They comped us with three pieces of dim sum, which was a nice gesture. At first it made me feel better but then I realized that it was old, leftover dim sum from what couldn't be sold that day. It was SUPER greasy and not crispy anymore. The quality of the food was pretty terrible. It was really greasy and the ratio of protein to filler veggies was really off. For example, we only got a couple pieces of fish but the majority in the dish were filler veggies. The final straw came when I found a gnarly piece of hair in the food. I've only written two other reviews upon posting this one. I rarely write them. But this meal was so unfortunate that I had to write something. Yikes.

Hoy Sun is your typical authentic Chinese restaurant, but a little more lacking in service and attentiveness. Maybe I didn't know how the system worked but the waitresses don't take notice of you and the woman at the counter ended up taking my order and then calling it back to the kitchen. It seems like you're supposed to order at the counter from the menu posted on the wall. However, once served the waitresses were friendly, although still not that attentive. That's typical of this type of Chinese restaurant. Pro tip: If you want something, be assertive. When you need to pay, don't wait for someone to bring you the check. Just get up and pay. I ordered the pork with thousand year old egg congee (jook) along with a side of the fried donut (which is a fried bread). The total was $5.00. It was a decent jook with good amounts of pork and preserved egg. The rice porridge had good flavor, not exceptional, but good enough to keep ordering it. The restaurant seems promising and I'll have to try out other dishes.

I love the dim sum here. Their soy sauce chow mein is one of the best in SF. They also have incredible porridge. Plus their prices are UNBEATABLE. One of the hidden gem here is their hot sauce. It is THE best hot sauce I ever tasted and I am a spicy lover. They make it in-house. It's not too salty and just the right amount of spice with a hint of garlic flavor. Love it!!! The service here is, like most hole in the wall Chinese restaurant, so-so. The Chinese waitresses are always so busy that they barely pay attention to what you wanted.

Great place to grab some to go food. Not so great if you're thinking about eating inside. Service can be barely existent because the workers here pace back and forth from the back of the room with trays of food to the front. Once you grab a seat, they give you a pot of tea. Unlike most restaurants, they don't charge for the trees which is nice. The menu is is littered with Chinese/English illiteration of popular Chinese dishes. It can be hard to navigate if you're not fluent in Chinese so choose carefully. I usually go with the fish congee and a main dish to share. This time it was sesame chicken with fish congee and a side of yow tiew (Deep fried Chinese doughnut). They have me a heaping pile of rice to go with the chicken and a pretty big bowl of congee. It came with more ginger then I'd prefer. Gonna ask for less next time. Overall, this place has a solid list of staples when it comes to Chinese fair, but the interior could definitely use some work as well as the service. The to go items that are my favorites are the shrimp rolls, shu Mai and the chicken rice bun.

This restaurant has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Me and my mother in law went here for lunch today and it took forever for them to take our order then when my mother in law asked for some ice water one of the waitresses had the nerve to say I don't speak english.how do you work in a business where you deal with customers of all ethnic groups and you don't speak english !! This is the last time I ever eat here I would not recommend it for anyone.unless you like bad service an being told they don't speak your language.... if I could give this place half a star I would..

Accessibility (Parking / Wait Time) 1/1 Star: night time street parking wasn't bad at dinner time. No wait. _____ Service (Waiter / Cleanness / Ambiance) 0/1 Star: service was bad even to Chinese standards. _____ Taste (0=Not Edible / 1=Edible / 2=Good (average) / 3=Must Try!) 2/3 Stars: food here is cheap and good. The honey BBQ ribs were delicious. The salty fish and chicken fried rice was also delicious. _____ Overall Experience 3/5 Stars _____ Last Words Pretty bad service.

I have been going to this restaurant for over 10 years and I still find the food to be very delicious. Me and my parents are regulars there and the owner knows us. The staff are all very kind and they provide good service every time. I have never had a bad experience here. I recommend their sizzling rice soup because it has the most variety and flavor out of any other sizzling rice soup i have ever had at other restaurants. I definitely cannot give them a review that is under 5 stars.

I used to come here a lot as a child. It was one of my FAVORITES Chinese Food Places EVER. Now that I am older, I think the quality has definitely gone down. The fried rice and chow mein are decent. Nothing GREAT either. The beef and broccoli is still AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. The service is definitely a drag. They don't check in on you when you dine in. Nothing irritates me more than that. Maybe I want some more water? Maybe I need a to go box? Or maybe I just want to see your face? Another thing is that they ONLY take Cash?! Really how annoying. We are in 2014, start accepting ATM/Credit CARDS. Sheesh, at least accept an ATM. On another note, the restaurant is ALWAYS dirty. Dirty floor, dirty tables. It seems as of they just don't care.

I've always been a take -out customer only. They have a lot of dim sum to choose from and often a line. But I think all the complain about people cutting in line helps because the waitress have always make an effort to stop people doing it. When someone's trying to do it to me they told the offender that they are not next. My go to item is the black egg, pork rice congee and chinese donut. Its my favorite breakfast. The 2 items take out combo with the choice of rice or noodle is always a stand by fast food.$5.5 portion big enough to fill my tummy. Since the plastic container law came into effect the container is smaller then before but that's not their fault. Their lotus leave steam rice tamale is also good with lots of flavor. Of course their char sui bao and steam cake is often very popular with kids. I'm glad that this convenient take out place is here so I am able to pop in and get my food fast. Business must be good, H.S open a new location in Milbrea

What is all the hype about? Yes, food is all right, but not exceptional. Average good San Francisco neighborhood Chinese food. No bathrooms, at least none that I could find. And cash only policy. Had sweet and sour pork. It was alright. Pot stickers were big and kind of resembled egg roll, at least with what they were filled with. Had good hot and sour beef soup. My wife had a beef-noodle dish that was also average. Prior reviews about slow service are correct. The place is full at lunch and waitresses have all the work they can handle. I prepared for this by taking my own cup of water, but after I ran out of water, had a hard time getting a refill. Found two other Chinese restaurants within the block. They were also packed and most people were Asian., A good sign. Will try them and compare all of them.

The place isn't fancy so why the four stars? It's because the food is good. The prices are more than fair but most of all, they treat my elderly mom with respect. They don't hurry her along, rather, they help her along. I love the dan tats, (they sell out fast).

Waitresses have a hard time speaking English. One of the waitresses actually yelled at a customer for ordering only one dish, I've never seen this happened before. That was quite rude!

The breakfast specials are cheap ($3 - $4) and they have their share of Chinese regulars. It's the kind of place you'd expect to find in Chinatown proper with sticky tables, cash only policy, fish tank, TV, and no frills decor. They also have chow mein, cooked dishes, fried rice, etc. You can dart in for some takeout dim sum and steamed buns. * Breakfast special, your choice of congee, one dim sum item ($4): The pork and preserved egg congee yelp.com/biz_photos/w-2C… had a funky texture; it wasn't smooth. The congee had a lot of meat in it. It was thick and bland with 2 thin shreds of ginger, a handful of chopped scallions, and big, tender pieces of pork. The steamed chicken bun was small, with a fluffy, soft, slightly sweet bun with chicken and mushrooms. It wasn't bad. Complimentary hot tea was provided. The congee was below average, the bun about average, and the value better than average. Cash only.

This place has good food for cheap. The 3 plate and a soup deal is totally worth it for a small family. I won't say this is the nicest of places but they already renovated and it looks a lot better than before.

My husband's family is Chinese, and they love coming here if they don't feel like driving too far for Chinese dinner. I've been here a couple of times and wasn't surprised at the lack of cleanliness that most Chinese restaurants have. But just last Sunday, it looks more tidier. Maybe the floors were mopped, and paraphernalia of stuff were put away (paper pads, office supplies displayed on shelves in a messy manner). Despite all of the above, they have a delicious round -fried tofu dish and crumbed fish fillets. It's super cheap and you can get a 5 course meal for $21 (which the fam always order).

  • Evan L.

I love their sliced pork and (thousand-year old) preserved egg porridge is my favorite. This cheap Chinese restaurant has some great Chinese food to offer. Although the wait staff here do not speak good English, they know enough to take your orders. You should give this place a shot whenever you come here. Cash only

One of the restaurants close to home if I don't feel like going to restaurants in Daly City or Millbrae. The food here is okay. This restaurant is similar to other Chinese restaurants around, most of the food tends to be super oily. The staff here are very nice. Driving? I honestly would not recommend driving there unless you can find a spot to park your car or if you have quarters for the meter during the day. If you come here during the day, it is much better cause you can just take the bus or walk there. Overall, I haven't had any problems eating here or ordering my food to go. Cash Only! 4/3/2014: The Sweet & Sour Pork with bell peppers and onions over rice - delicious. I also tried the Broccoli & Beef with Rice - another delicious item to try. Service here is actually good and prompt. Staff members seem friendly which is a good thing. The Hours of Operation are: Monday - Saturday 7:00 am - 9:00 pm Sunday 7:30 am - 9:00 pm

I'm their regular customer. But I'm not going back. They let people cut in line. I went there to get takeout this morning. I was in line for about 2-3 minutes waiting for them to finish helping someone before me. When a lady came in and just started ordering before they finished helping the first customer. Even after I told them in Chinese that I got there first and that I was in a hurry (one quarter in the meter/ 8 mins), they continued to help the lady who cut in line. It's shocking! So I left. There are plenty of restaurants, bakery and grocery stores in the neighborhood. You don't expect good customer service out of this place but you don't deserve a horrible experience. So stay away.

I used to love coming here for their early morning dim sum, their $5 three item meal plates and their delicious Korean Chicken Wings but have since switched to either Wing Hing, San Bruno Cafe or Ling Ling Cuisine. It wasn't bc of their food but their lack of customer service. ****sad face I came in one morning **it's dim sum rush and asked the worker helping me if they had any BBQ Pork Buns left, wait of 15 minutes so I said ok I'll wait but have a few more orders to place. The lady behind me shouts out if they had any rice rolls left?? ***Of course they do!! She then goes to help the other lady behind me instead. ***WTF. Weren't you suppose to help me finish my order first before passing me up to help the woman behind me? I told the lady I had more order to place with her but she quickly brushed me off and told me what I wanted wasn't ready yet so I would have to wait anyways. ****Angry bird mode!! YEP, I'm now taking my money else where.. ****Helping the customer first in line is a must before attending to the others. But hey I guess with cheap take out, you get cheap service.

Love their old traditional dim sum. Their lunch rice plates are a bargain. They are generous with their portions. It comes with house soup. There is a big selection to choose. Salted fish chicken eggplant was one of their choice. $21.00 for three dishes with rice and soup.

I saw the average 4.5 stars based on 8 previous Yelps, and I thought to myself, "Have I been missing out on something really good in the neighborhood?" It turned out to be a false alarm. The food at Hoy Sun is definitely cheap home style Chinese comfort food, but it fell flat in several areas. Don't worry about having to speak Cantonese here. The waitresses speak very good English. The service is a bit on the slow side as far as a waitress returning to take your order. I had a late lunch here around 2 PM, and I was the only diner here at the time. There were maybe three waitresses milling about and none wanted to take my order. It wasn't until I turned to one did she ask whether I was ready to order. First came the complimentary bowl of house soup. This was authentic Chinese stuff-that-your-mom-used-to-brew-at-home type of soup with the chunks of carrot, chunks of lotus root, shreds of boiled beef, red beans and citrus peel in a nicely seasoned cloudy broth. It was quite good. I wish I could have said the same thing about the Dry Fried Beef Chow Fun ( yelp.com/biz_photos/w-2C… ) that I ordered. While there was an abundant amount of soft rice noodles, there seemed to be much more bean sprouts and sliced white onion. Many of the chunks of rice noodles had a crust attached to them meaning two possible things which I have experienced in cooking. First there probably wasn't enough oil and the wok was too hot causing the noodles to stick to the pan, or maybe the wok was just dirty from previous use. I'm thinking the latter because there were bits of overcooked greens that didn't belong in the chow fun. Also the beef was tenderized (possibly baking soda) and had an unnatural slimy texture. As I sat there thinking maybe I had ordered the wrong item, a stinging sensation suddenly appeared on the tip of my tongue. That's right, folks; you've been there before. That's the familiar sting of MSG! Sorry folks, no matter how good your house soup is and how inexpensive your menu items are, I don't frequent places that use MSG. For Chinese comfort food in the neighborhood, I'm sticking to Wing Hing or Ling Ling just steps away.

  • Carmen L.

Got the combination lunch for $5 with fried rice, tofu, and sweet and sour pork. The rice was okay but the sweet and sour pork was very dry and bland. The tofu also tasted bland as well. I'm not saying I rather them load it with msg but it could use a little more seasoning (salt).

Decently priced Chinese food. It's not amazing, but pretty good for the price. If you're craving Chinese food, and need something quick and in the neighborhood. I recommend the hot garlic crispy chicken over rice.

I really do hate to write 1 star reviews... but this place stinks. No, literally. The table we sat at was still stinky, and the floor had food underneath that is clearly visible to people walking around! Then i decide to give them another chance with dim sum... Not only do they ignore people when people order, they have the audacity to mock the customers if they're annoyed by them. I witnessed one of the lady employees basically yell at a customer for asking excessive questions. Also, people cut in line and they really don't give a f***.

clean? no. but this is the neighborhood go to place for comfort food. its predictable and fast chinese food. i love morning porridge and chinese donut. cheap good quality food. and they are friendly, as friendly as chinese ladies can be.

What's a "family restaurant"? Hoy Sun may be family owned but it is also where we've had many family dinners. You see, each time I come up to the City to visit my NoCal peeps we always gather at my Uncle H.'s. It was no different this weekend. Uncle H. treated us to dinner at Hoy Sun, a place that understands our family get-togethers. We eat, we talk, we eat, we laugh, we eat, and sometimes we cry but we always enjoy each other's company and we are never in a rush to part ways. Unlike SoCal, NoCal seems to be filled with many hole-in-the-wall authentic restaurants like Hoy Sun where the food is good and the servers know their customers. Some folks may look down on these kinds of eateries but for us it is a family restaurant. Next time? Gonna try some of those custards they sell at the counter.

One of the better Chinese restaurants in the Portola District (San Bruno Ave.). My go to spot for porridge. Only $3.50! Cant beat that price. Other places are almost always $5 and up. The porridge is actually good. Not watery. It has adequate meat and preserved eggs. Other dishes are okay and average. I didn't try alot from here, but you usually cant go wrong here. It always has patrons, so that's a good sign. The to go food is alright too.

GOT ALL MY FAVORITE dim sums here just two doors over from my new favorite Duck place...the food here was excellent, prices were too. I never have to drag my booty all the way to Chinatown again for good dim sum!

Stopped into Hoy Sun today since I was in the area with a family friend. She wanted to treat my brother and me to lunch; Hoy Sun was actually a back-up choice since our friend had wanted to take us to another place down the street, but that place was super-packed and we were too hungry to wait. I almost wish we could have waited, though.... Well, so we went to Hoy Sun. Service was pretty frustrating to deal with; it's typical of some Chinese eateries, but still doesn't mean that it's okay. We had to flag down several different servers to get them to first take our order, then to refill our tea, and so on, so on. Food came out really slowly; the place was busy, but I didn't think our orders would take so long to prepare. The saving grace of the lunch was probably the Yin Yang Fried Rice. My brother chose the dish randomly, didn't even realize what it was until it came to the table. It's a very sauce-filled circular Pyrex with fried rice (of course), shrimp, chicken, tomatoes, egg, and other ingredients (can't remember off the top of my head); the ingredients of the dish are presented neatly in light and dark sauce representing yin and yang. As far as I'm aware, few Chinese restaurants serve this dish. My brother didn't like the dish so much because it had too much sauce for him, but I personally liked it; I liked the slight sweetness of the tomato sauce and the creamy, savory taste of the sauce with the egg and shrimp. We also ordered Duck Egg Congee and Fish with Black Bean Sauce and Rice. There was also house soup, which was fine, typical of home-style cooking. The congee and fish dishes were average, nothing to write home about since the same recipe/taste could probably be found in other restaurants. The place is heavily Chinese, at least during the weekend lunch/brunch hour. According to Wilhelm Y., the servers speak English here, but I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't read his review. They spoke exclusively to us in Cantonese, which was fine since our family friend was there. I don't know how I would fare if I went alone/with other friends, though. The tables were a little messy/disorganized, and the bathroom was quite scary to be in. One of the big black trash bins was in the bathroom, so that was a bit of a turn-off. At least the bin wasn't sitting outside in the dining area, though. I can see why our family friend had wanted to take us to the other restaurant in the first place; Hoy Sun seems like a decent joint, but to me, it was a bit of a turn-off with the service. They had to-go dim sum/foods in front, which I was curious about. Maybe if I'm in the area again, I'll give them another try. Gotta keep supporting my people somehow...

Very neat little Chinese restaurant. Its as authentic as Chinese food gets, and its very affordable. There's a ton of other yummy dishes... Some written in Chinese only and posted on the wall. serves real Chinese home style cooking with all the hidden gem choices on the menu, and the American popularized menu choices... And some dim sum. They speak Engrish but they try to be helpful and are very nice folks. Oh, and tastes AMAZING.

Why not a 5-star? The physical appearance of the restaurant isn't exactly welcoming. My cousins wouldn't dare eat the fish because they saw fish in the tank that had mold on what they claimed to be 'half-alive' fish with gray eyes.. Food poisoning is never pleasant.. Not sure what it was we ate, but 4 people in my fam had to use the bathroom.. and lucky me, I just vomited about 5x throughout the night a night after. And a few other relatives reported unsettled feeling the day after. Why 3-stars? Overall, the food was pretty good. We ordered banquet meal and had the opportunity to try a variety of dishes. *cold plate w/jellyfish, pickled carrot/daikon, mini octopus, sliced pork- jellyfish lacked flavor and skimped on the amount of jellyfish. Octopus had a slightly sweet flavor- I liked it. *sugar snap peas w/scallop and calamari- decent nothing to rave about. *beef w/onion and fried salt and pepper tofu- beef was very tender and yummy eaten with onions; tofu was decent. *crisp chicken w/shrimp chips- very good. chicken cooked perfectly. white meat was juicy! and I even ate the skin which I rarely do. *birthday noodles- Very good. I couldn't stop eating this once my stomach decided I was full. My eyes were not..so I kept feasting. Lovely slightly chewy and soft noodles covered with minced chicken and shrimp. *steamed fish- HUUUUGE fish! No clue what they feed it..hope it was alive in that tank prior.. Tender, meaty, flaky fish. *lobster w/clearglass noodles- decent. I'm not the biggest fan of lobster. *pea sprouts w/gravy- very good. one of my favorites that evening. love the taste of it when cooked in a bit of hot oil. *bun filled with sweet bean paste- tasty flower petal-shaped white buns. Overall, taste wise, food was decent but after this incident, I probably won't be coming back anytime soon. Give me another year..I may change my mind!

I need a hole in the wall dim sum and cheap rice plate place every now and then. Today was that day. Two items with rice or noodles for a flat $5 or lots of siu mai and har gow, with egg custards and sticky rice to choose from. Nothing says "Pick me! Pick me!" better than a crowded steam table. Don't try to get ahead of people, just stand in line and wait your turn. It could get really ugly if you don't. Good cheap food. Not the cleanest place, but they get an extra star because one of the ladies hooked me up with my big order of dim sum by getting it for me fast when it came right out of the kitchen. Sorry, I waited an extra 5 minutes for those people! You snooze you lose! Don't expect a whole lot of service. This is cheap Chinese food at it's best. Get in, eat, get out. If you're expecting more, move on.

This restaurant has a good selection of lunch plates, many for $5.95. I like one plate that is unique in that I don't see it at other places: abalone and pork liver over rice. The last two times I've visited this restaurant it's what I ordered. They give you a good sizable bowl of house soup to go with your lunch plate. The downside is that it apparently gets pretty hectic here during lunch. I was not greeted upon coming in, and when I saw other incoming customers just seating themselves and then calling out to the serving staff I decided I had to do the same thing. At least they apologized a bit for the initial inattention.

Pure chaos in the dim sum take out line. The patrons here doesn't quite grasp the idea of a line. When I tried to complain, they pretend they didn't speak english. I said something to the take out person behind the counter, they just looked at me.

This place is really a 3.5 star restaurant but I'm bumping them up to four because it's my local place and they're always so nice to me. this is the first restaurant i patronized in my 'hood. my kid likes coming here quite a bit. Dishes that I especially like here: on choy their big bean leaf dry braised string beans. this is probably one of their best dishes. their shrimp fried rice and i don't even like shrimp that much. in fact this might be my favorite of their dishes. now, on to my wonton soup obsession... i've had two varieties. i had a bowl with bbq pork today. the bbq pork was okay, the wontons were okay and that was about it. honestly, i'd put their wonton soup on the 2.5 or 3 star level. i wish i liked their wonton soup more. fortunately their other dishes are good. i see a lot of families here eating on the weekends. this place seems to feed a lot of chinese people which is a good sign. i'm usually the only person here who isn't chinese and i kinda like that. four stars 'cause they have a solid group of dishes i like, their prices are fair, i get a smile every time i come, and the ladies who work here are genuinely lovely. i love feeling like a regular anywhere and i've always felt that here. Cootz OUT! ({}) (p.s. bring cash.)

This is a restaurant my family likes going because it good eats but cheap. The only con I would say is that, it is not the cleanest restaurant but the food is good. I typically order food here to go when I worked. I would order the Beef Chow Fun and Beef & Broccoli over rice for my friend. The Beef Chow Fun is amazing, it is a bit greasy but that's what makes it good I guess. The beef is very tender and cooked over a wok with flat rice noodles, onions and bean sprouts. Beef & Broccoli is amazing as well, tender beef with broccoli with onions and garlic in gravy over rice. The portions are big and not small, this place is not skimpy. Overall this place is good to eat here and food to go. They have a counter that sells hot food to go and dim sums to go as well. They even have steam buns like steam pork buns. Cheap eats without spending too much! -Parking- Parking is hard because it's on San Bruno Ave, and there are a lot of restaurants here and it would be metered parking. **QUICK TIP** Bring cash! No cards.

Great Chinese food! Ask for $5 combo plate to go! It will guarantee to satisfy! My a couple of my friends recommended me this place and their $5 combo plate. I didn't believe them at first that they could barely finish it but they were right. They give a LOT. The $5 combo plate you can get any main dish which they have chow mein, chow fun, fried rice, and 2 sides. Lots of options, to go. This place is the only Chinese food restaurant I will go to in San Bruno. They have great quality food and very affordable. I always get a $5 combo plate here with chow mein, sesame chicken, and the non fried tofu to go every time I come here. The sesame chicken here is a MUST TRY. These people are very friendly and have a big smile on their face, which makes me feel welcome all the time. Without a doubt, I'll be back.

what i ordered... steamed pork bun and steamed custard bun ...both buns were of small sizes compared to the norm but cost less. steamed pork bun was ok, good fillings but was 'split top' which i am not a fan of when it comes to steamed buns for the dough alway's comes up tougher. custard bun was good, dough as well as the filling were done right. fyi... they also sell panda express like food to go. ambiance... so-so (untidy, almost a full restaurant but with an aura of a hole in a wall) service... ok (fast pace with a smile) cost...$- (inexpensive)

Just like most other Chinese restaurants out there, the food is overly oily. However, what makes this place stand out is the great service and the above average food they offer. This is the only Chinese restaurant i go to in the neighborhood. My friend and i always come here for the 5 dollar combo. The 5 dollar combo includes one main dish ( chow mein, chow fun, or fried rice) and 2 side dishes ( 10-12 items to choose from, such as beef and broccoli, egg rolls, pot stickers, roast fried tofu, plain tofu, sweet and sour pork and many more) I always get the chow mein with sesame chicken ( a MUST HAVE) and the plain tofu. a bit oily as expected but really good. Also, the workers always stuff my box so i always get a lot food. I never finished it once. and i always take it home and save it for later. This place also serve breakfast such as dumplings and dim sum. I come here often for breakfast and it always makes my tummy happy. I want to come back to this place not only because of the food, but also the great and friendly service they provide.

This a totally a friendly neighborhood family restaurant. LIKES... - Cheap: For two orders to-go, it only cost about $12 on average. - Friendly waitresses: Very attentive and efficient. - Homey dishes: They make whitie dishes like lemon chicken to homey dishes like steamed pork with egg (which was incredibly delicious!!). - Large variety of food: You name it, they make it. It doesn't even have to be on the menu. - Huge portions: It's enough for two meals and they give you like a large mountain of rice per order. - It's got a hot deli area: It got the dim sum and ready-to-go dishes like beef chow fun and rice porridge. - Opens 7 days a week: Yup, like most Chinese restaurants do. It's open to at least 9pm, even on Sundays! - Speaks English: The waitresses might look like they are hardcore Chinese ladies from the villages, but dude, they can speak English well enough to take orders and communicate with you. Obviously, there are better Chinese restaurants out there, but I do like this place because of their customer service. Typically, Chinese restauarants gives really crappy service but here, they are nice. I love that they are VERY welcoming and HOMEY.

The owner is the nice lady out in front. Shes so nice and so friendly! She also speaks fairly decent english! I shorted her a couple of dollars but since I ordered so much from her she told me to give it to her next time and i did. I felt so bad but she told me it was okay. The food is made fresh when you order from the menu. My favorite dish is their steamed pork with salty fish :)

Their Korean Chicken is the main reason I've gone there. They were one of the first Chinese restaurants to open in the area before all the others came along. Yet for some reason, they are the only restaurant to serve Korean Chicken. It's great when it's just newly cooked. In fact, I order party trays of it to bring to parties. Ordering it can be trying at times, since few of the ones working there know enough English to make the order. The effort is worth it. It is that good.

I grew up eating at this restaurant and the workers are so nice and sweet. The food always brightens up my day. Whenever i make a new friend at school who i find out lives near me, i almost always find out that they have also been in love with this restaurant for their entire lives growing up.

Wow this is one of the best chinese restaurants I've been too. Eating-in is definitely the way to go. It seems like the staples are the dry chow fun, shrimp fried noodles and wonton soup. All yummy! I also tried their take-out counter which was pretty bad (at least the chow mein they served I did not like). The sides were fine I think but I don't think I would do get food from the counter again. Though the egg preservatives and pork porridge was the best and can easily be ordered at the counter. Can't say the food isn't greasy but it's quite comforting to have once in a while.

Very friendly service, but the food... I ordered the kung pow beef with a side of rice, and she took the liberty of ordering me two egg rolls when I only asked whats in them. My order of beef literally had more vegetables then beef, I never seen that much ginger slices on an order of food, not even when I order multiple items that might have it in the dish. It was amazing how much greens were in too. I will never be coming here again, I wouldn't even let my dog eat the food here.

it's worth 3.5 stars. The food is like any other Chinese restaurant. The price is decently priced. The waitress were helpful and friendly. We had: Walnut shrimp-- portion was small Eggplant with chicken and salty fish-- a little too salty Sweet and Sour pork-- crispy outside but they fried a lot of fatty parts instead of meaty parts. It was good though String beans with beef-- good but a tad oily but like any other Chinese plates. Overall, the food was good for it's price and it's a place close to home that a lot of families would go to. Nothing to travel for though. NEGATIVE:: Cash Only

Let me preface this review by saying that I doubt I will EVER sit down here for a meal. If this restaurant was in Los Angeles, it would get a solid "B" rating for cleanliness, bordering on a "C". However, for take out, this place is not bad. Especially Dim Sum take out. Since my mom lives so close, we did just that. We had several items, the Shu Mai which was my favorite of the dumplings. The flavor was really delicious. The shrimp dumplings, which were just all right. Both chicken and bbq pork steamed buns - the pork ones were better, by a landslide. After a while though, I felt that there was too much bread, and just started eating the filling. There was another dumpling involved, the name of which slips my mind. But there were scallions and peanuts as well as some ground pork. It wasn't that great, so it's probably not a bad thing that I can't remember what it was. We also had a some chicken porridge with century egg. I liked the porridge a lot, but I felt that the egg was too broken up, and felt a little cheated, as if they hadn't put that much to begin with. For something quick and in the area, this place was decent. But it wouldn't be my go-to. Cash and street parking only.

Well, its cheap and its OK. Have not get sick or anything. I got the $5 rice combo when you pick 2 entrees plus rice or noodles to go and I usually order a beef chow fun. The first time, experience was good. The 2nd time I think they over charge me. I think the lady in charge of chashier was just winging it. I order almost identical items like the last time but there was definitely charge more like $1.65 more the 2nd time. I am agreeing with the other post on yelp that this lady will charge you more if she feels like it and also she will lower the price on the dim sum if they are old and at the end of the day. They are busy most of the time. I guess business is super good.

I grew up eating at this place, some of the nicest Chinese ladies that'll ever sell you dim sum! 17 years of my life I've been dinning in and taking out the food is good not great but when I have that hankering for som authentic Chinese food fast and cheap with good positions I'm here! 5$ combination with 2 sides and an entrée and it's packed to capacity as well so you can't complain!

Pros: Cheap, great attitude, close to home, tasy food. Cons: Loud, busy. This is one of my favorite restaurants! The prices are great, I love the smiles of the ladies behind the counter, and I genuinely love the food. Yes, it looks like a 'hole in the wall,' but the best restaurants often do. **Prices: For $5 my partner and I can split a combo rice box (a large plastic to-go box with rice or chow mein plus two other items). We never can finish it all. Total with drinks it costs $7 for us to eat here. Best value for money/quality. I also like grabbing a large or small container of chow mein or sesame chicken. Small (one item): $1.25, Large (one item): $3.75. The large lasts me for two meals, the small is a nice light meal or snack. Sodas are $1 (canned). Plus, my partner will have my head if I don't mention the pork buns. Apparently they are The Best Ever. She craves them and buys them 6 at a time. I think the are 3 for $1.25. If not, it's something equally ridiculously cheap. **Smiles: The women behind the counter are loud, funny, and always offer a huge smile. I love their attitudes; I always feel 100% welcome here. There is only a small amount of English spoken, but they are patient and happy to figure it out. **Food: The food at Hoy Sun is a pretty typical assortment -- chow mein, fried rice, sesame chicken, dim sum, sweet and sour pork and chicken, tofu dishes, various breads (many baked goods), pork buns, pepper steak, as well as many items I have yet to find the courage to try... All of it is tasty. Also, the lack of stomach cramps after eating there suggests very low MSG levels (if any). I ate their food for a week once, and if my schedule hadn't changed, I would eat it every day. The Chinese patrons come in and watch soap operas during lunch. There are always loud conversations, and it is typically very busy. I don't mind this, but other reviewers mentioned it, so I decided to also. Bottom line -- I would bring my friends, brother, and parents to eat here. It doesn't look fancy or cost very much, but I absolutely love the food and the people.

Since my last review of Hoy Sun was on breakfast only, I'm going to switch it up and update everyone of my last dinner experience there. Came here with the fam and my friends and we all enjoyed the meal here on a busy Saturday night. Usually when I'm with my fam, we just order noodles and fried rice for ourselves. But with my friends joining us for dinner, we went family style and ordered a number of items: Walnut Prawns, Spicy Eggplant, Seafood Tofu Claypot, Fukien Fried Rice, Preserved Eggs over Spinach, Mixed Mushrooms with Tofu Skin and Fishballs, and Chicken Chow Mein. Believe me when I say there was a lot of food on the table! My favorite of the night was the newly found fishball dish. I think many people will find it too bland, but I didn't mind that everything in the dish was basically steamed, keeping things simple and healthy. The veggies (napa cabbage and mushrooms) had a good crunch to them and the tofu skin was not crushed or flaky. That's always a good thing. Now the fishballs. Man, they were awesome. You could tell it was made in-house, since they were not all rolled uniformly. It had a springy texture when you bit into them, and a taste of cilantro and scallions followed. I wished I could have had more, but being that I was in a larger group, I had to hold back my urges. I was glad my friends liked the food here too. It's like a new hole-in-the-wall that they've experienced. Whatever, Hoy Sun is a nice family restaurant, with really tasty and home-cooked like meals that's keeps us going back!

This is the kind of place to go during one of those "I woke up late but I still want porridge" kind of days. At least that's where I go to get my "jook" cravings when I KO the night before and wake up at 12PM. Cheap, fast service and cheap. Don't expect to be flattered though.

DONT come here with your friends, only good for take outs! Dont eat here, although you get free soup of the day. I came here with couple of friends, ordered rice plates. They put 1 plate of rice for all of us..-_-

In high school, my mom, grandma and I would come here literally a few times a week. This place has a homey feel. It's not pretentious or decorative. It feels like I'm at an aunt's house. Anyway the food is delicious and the prices are okay. The XO Beef is good, their fried fish with sweet and sour sauce is yummy. Most of their dim sum is okay (it's to-go dim sum). Their mochi coconut balls are soooo good (they're in the front of the restaurant inside the glass display case. I haven't been there in a while but I will go back because we're pretty much best friends with the staff there. There was one lady who worked there that was a bit pushy about tips. It was close to Chinese New Year's and we were eating dinner there. She was kinda trying to hint that we should give her more tips because of Chinese New Year's approaching. I thought that was a bit rude since it's not like she's a cute lil kid. Only unmarried ppl get money on Chinese New Year's. Haha

  • Glen H.

I came here since I was a kid since I lived in the area, and from what I remember, it used to be a bit of a dirty place. I came recently and it was much cleaner, although I would definitely come even if it was dirty. The workers have known me since I was a kid, so they pretty much memorized my order. Like always, the porridge is cheap (definitely used to be cheaper, but where hasn't been raising prices?). I love the fish porridge, especially for breakfast with the fried Chinese donuts they have I recommend the salty circular ones, I only know the name in Chinese, so I can't be of much help. The soy sauce noodles are also good, and the portions are huge. The lunch and dinner menus were pretty good from what I remember. I love the fact that they have my favorite dish, Preserved Mustard Greens and Pork over rice (I only know the Chinese name, sorry). If you don't know what to get, ask for a recommendation. There are a bunch of items that used to be posted up on the walls, but they took it down since they introduced a new menu (I don't know why).

I've been trying to figure out what this place was called in like forever. I've been here numerous times over the years. This place serves break fast, sells dim sum, porridge, and also serves dinner items with rice and dishes. But most people come here for the porridge, noodles and things of that sort. They are extremely busy during the early morning and noon. Grandmas, grandpas and their grandchildren wait in line for their turn to order. It slows down in the afternoon, but I still prefer the crowd in the morning =) They have good porridge. This is my spot to eat when I'm feeling sick LOL. Their soy sauce chow mein can do better with more ingredients though. Parking is a BITCH, so go knock on a relative's door and tell them you're gonna park outside their garage for 30 minutes.

    (3)
  • Judy K.

Cheap hole in the wall but good for Chinese style breakfast kind of a spot. Run by a group of ladies that often talk too loud and yell across the room...but they are super friendly and can take your orders without having to jot it down on paper. Impressive! Usual Chinese fare...jook with anything you want in it and pre-made dim sum that they also sell at the counter. It's like eating at mom's place!

4 stars for their $3 porridge with preserved egg and salted pork. pretty darn good.

The abalone, pork, and tofu dish is a super bargain. Get this dish. It's a hefty amount of quality chinese food for $9 that puts the similar Koi Palace seven treasures tofu dish to shame. The tomato and egg soup was light and fresh. The service was decent, and the place is pretty clean. The price is a steal.

I've been here a couple times with my fiance and her family. At first I thought it would be one of those typical Chinese restaurants with rude waitresses. Well, I was wrong. The waitstaff pretty much reminds me of the old school diners of the past. The food is great and cheap. The dishes come out pretty fast from the kitchen. The rice comes in a tupperware so it seems like home. Great place for some home cooked meals.

  • Jm V.

The food is 'ok'. Other than it's the cheapest food on the block, there's nothing special about it. The service is slow and the place is down right grimy. The city heath inspector gave them a poor score card (posted next to the front door) and I see why.

I LOVE fried tofu. I LOVE fried fish. I LOVE chinese places that have lunch menus that cost 4 bucks. Hoy Sun is that place. I only give it 3 because it is just TOO freakin far away from where I live. The place is always packed, the service is really nice (especially if you have a cantonese speaking friend to help you out.) Parking is really hard during any hour and that also gives it a minus. But if you live/work close in the area..then you can have a really cheap tastey lunch, lots of baked goods, and dim sum options. Don't look for steakhouse furnishings here boys/girls! Hole in the wall w/good food!

I know my shu mai and you can't get better shu mai anywhere else! Everything here is really cheap, too. My family has been coming here for years and my dad still comes to pick up lunch for my relatives about once a week. The chow mein is also very good and never greasy. Be sure to get some egg custards while you're here, theirs are definitely in the top 3 I've ever had and I always make my dad buy at least a dozen when he comes. Parking is horrendous, so you're better off parking really far and just walking rather than circling for an hour hoping to find something. Oh yeah, it's also cash only.

This is one of those ghetto places that my family goes to once in a while. I go out to eat dinner with my grandpa on friday night and this has been a regular place. This place is decent, but not great. This is definitely a family ran restaurant with a fast food bar in the front with various dishes that company rice or noodles. They also have dim sum. This place really looks like it belongs in chinatown (even though this around is pretty much China-matized). Yesterday, it was only my grandpa, my dad, and I here for dinner. We ordered the 38 dollar meal that came with pigeon, lobster, fried rice, and large pea sprouts. Considering the lobster was fresh (saw them take it out of the tank), the meal is pretty cheap. We also added on sweet and sour pork and a fried thick rice noodle. My dad always overkills on ordering, but it was okay because the leftovers fed my grandpa and my dad for a second meal, along with my sister and stepmom. Overall the food here is decent (don't expect much). They always advertise their honey stir-fried pork chop. One time it was really good, the next time it was horrible. Even when it was really good, I liked their sweet and sour pork alot better. My mom said that their porridge is really good here, but I have not had the chance to try it. I know for a fact, I'll be coming here a lot more in the future friday nights.

Yay! The... oh god I can't say this in english.... "chicken" crackers? Okay that sounded stupid. "Guy Zai Bang" Close enough. Yeah, they're amazing. Oily, but addicting. Perfect combination. Jook is pretty good, no need to travel down to Chinatown. And dinner is pretty well-priced. There's actually a lot of people, and that's always a good sign.

everytime i have a craving for jook, the only place i can think of for the longest times are way out in the boonie (ie. sunset or chinatown cuz I live near the end of SF and the start of Daly City). My fren recommended me this place and I had a try this past Saturday. Love the jook - it's very soft indicating that it has been cooked for a good amount of time. There was a good balance of water and rice. my favorite had always been the pork and thousand year old egg. my honey had the fish and pork blood (on the menu, there's only 3 bowls of jook you can order and the rest are jook in a bigger bowl meant for sharing. But you can actually mix up the ingredients if you want and i think it was the same price as the small bowl - $3.00). can't eat jook without "yao tiu" - the chinese donut and the "ja learn" - chinese donut with a layer of white stuff (umm.. the kind you find similar to flat noodles?). the "ja learn" is not as good as i had liked it.. they didn't make it as a single entity but just put the "yao tiu" and had the white stuff wrapped around it. too bad. anyways. not bad considering i dont have to go far anymore for jook. also felt the server seems to know their regulars a lot. i like that.

  • Yoko S.

The only 4 star instead of 5 is the place was freezing cold and they didn't seem to care. I liked the steamed fish dish the best, it's so simple and unlike most other greasy Chinese food here, reminds me more of the Japanese food I grew up with.

    (4)
  • Mar M.

Hoy Sun is a great place to get pretty good Chinese food in large portions. I'm a fan of the combo plate, where you can choose either (1) rice, chow mein or chow fun and (2) 2 entrees ranging from fried tofu and mushrooms to sesame chicken. The rice plates are also good. You can mix 'n match shrimp, chicken, etc, with your favorite sauce or style (with vegetables, with curry, etc). The regular entrees aren't spectacular, but the combo plates and rice plates are an amazing deal and very tasty. Now, the quality seems to vary a bit from day to day, which is why this review only gets 4 stars. Sometimes the combo plate items aren't quite as fresh, or things aren't prepared quite to the same recipe. You can either have a GREAT day at Hoy Sun or just an OK day. But if you live in the area, it's worth a shot.

  • Alice C.

Hell yes to this hole in the wall. I try to make it here whenever I come back to the city but the parking really does suck. Dim sum, lunch, and dinner are the best. For breakfast I always get the jook and the fried bread. I speak Cantonese so service is never a problem...but I can imagine how it might be. Read the specials on the wall if you can read Chinese.

  • Nathan W.

I've stopped in a number of times when working in the neighborhood. The food is serviceable, and the service is usually horrid. I love it how the women in these places sometimes make up their own prices when it comes to how much they charge. On my most recent visit, the lady stared at the small mountain of food that she dumped in the container, and finally came up with $5.40. That wasn't what the board said what I'd ordered had cost, but whatever.

    (3)
  • Audrey J.

3.5 stars for this hole-in-the-wall, no-frills Chinese restaurant. Give it a try if you're in the neighborhood. They do decent business as a take-out place with a take-out counter at the entrance that serves pastries like egg custards and coconut custard rolls and hot dishes like fried rice, beef w/broccoli, etc. to go. Or you can stay and eat in their restaurant. It's not much to look at, but their food is fresh and tasty, and the family waitstaff is very friendly. Come here for the jook (rice porridge) and get the yoo jah gui (Chinese fried donuts) to put into your jook. Unlike some other places, they offer the donuts seven days a week!

    (4)
  • Amy T.

The only reason I come here is because of convenience. It's the only restaurant in the neighborhood where you can get counter to-go dim sum. Their prices are a bit high, service is not always friendly and outright rude at times. And yes, like Nathan W. says, they make up their own prices even though there's a price list on the wall. One time I ordered a bunch of dim sum and a shredded pork and preserved egg congee (or porridge). The lady told me it costs xxx. I wanted to make sure so I asked her how much it was again. In a split second she raised the price on me. I said, "You just told me xxx." She proceeded to tell me it was for tax. When I made it a point again that she had just told me a different price, she then said it was for the container. Make up your mind lady! It is very seldom that I come here, and when I do it's purely for convenience. Their dim sum is just ok. You can get better in Chinatown or elsewhere for sure.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
